Bonamiosis is a disease affecting the flat oyster Ostrea edulis and caused by the protozoa parasite Bonamia ostreae, which is affiliated to the haplosporidia order and the cercozoa phylum. This parasite is mainly intracellular, infecting haemocytes, circulating cells playing an important role in the oyster's defence mechanisms. Even though the parasite's cycle has not been completely understood yet, direct infection from infected oysters to healthy oysters is possible. This leads us to think that there is no intermediary host in the cycle. Very little data on the parasite's infection mechanisms or the host's defence mechanisms is available. In order to better comprehend the Bonamia ostreae / host interaction, some flat oyster's haemocytes have been put in... |

The study concerns two previously unseen Protozoa, Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae, responsible for epizootics in the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis L. The epizootiological aspect, the impact of diseases on Breton oyster farming and the research for appropriate prophylaxes is addressed. The morphology, the ultrastructure and certain phases of the growth cycle are described for the two parasites, as well as their cyto- and histopathogenic effects. The epizootiology explains the evolution of the diseases in space and time, their conditions for propagating, the sensitivity of the parasites and the receptivity of various test hosts. A summary analysis of Breton oyster farming before and during the epizootic is done. It makes it possible to judge the... |

Introducing new species for shellfish farming is essential for expanding farmers' markets and for minimising the pathological risks that endangers professional marine aquaculture activities, which traditionally rely on only one species. Ifremer's Aquaculture and Pathological Genetics (GAP) laboratory participates in the mollusc genetics network (REGEMO). Since 1989, this network has been carrying out a selection programme for resistance or tolerance to Bonamia ostreae in European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) to revitalize cultivation of this species on a national level. |

French summary: In 1974, at the request of a group of oyster farmers in the Brittany region, the Pathology Laboratory of the U.E.R. Medicine of Brest undertook a series of theoretical and applied research projects concerning the problem of flat oyster digestive gland disease, due to Marteilia refringens, the primary economic problem of that time. In 1978, in the research report of Contract C.N.E.X.O. 77/1690, the main results obtained since the beginning of the study of the parasitosis were made public. The present report has as its objective to show: - The results obtained in 1978-1979 while monitoring the parasitosis, and most especially the epidemiological evolution of the disease; - Information concerning the presence of other infectious diseases... |

The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, a native of Europe, occurs naturally from Norway to Morocco in the North-Eastern Atlantic and in the whole Mediterranean Basin; It has been a harvested species for at least 6000 years. Natural populations are also observed in eastern North America, from Maine to Rhode Island, following intentional introductions in the 1940s and 1950s. The species was also introduced in Canada for aquaculture purpose 30 years ago and some populations naturalised in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia. These stocks were imported from naturalised populations in Maine whose ancestors originated in the Netherlands. |

The total marine molluscs produced by aquaculture had increased from 1984 to 1990 by 1 000 000 tons going from 1 993 985 tons to 2 964 688 tons. The oyster production remained constant with 870 000 tons. Crassostrea gigas, the Japanese oyster, represented more than 80 % of the oyster production but high mortalities appeared in different countries connected to end of winter and summer mortalities and development of new diseases. The cultivation of Crassostrea virginica, the American oyster, was limited (80 000 tons) by the spreading of two diseases (MSX and dermo) destruction of habitat and over-exploitation. Production of the fiat oyster Ostrea eduIis was still very limited by the presence of the Bonamia diseases in a11 the countries except on... |

On the contrary to the U. S. where they represent but 4.6% of the total marine production , mollusc, principally bivalves, can no longer be considered as a marginal production. In France, 100 000 ton of oysters, 98% of which is represented by Crassostrea gigas (Héral & al., 1985) and 85 000 ton of mussels (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus edulis galloprovincialis) (Dardignac, 1985) are produced yeraly. Elsewhere, new rearings are being developed, such as pectinidae and Ruditapes philippinarum, on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. The species presently cultured, some of which dependiing only on natural collections (Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis while others depend on hatchery production, either partially Crasssotrea gigas in... |

In summer 2006 an extensive mortality of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas occurred in Lake Grevelingen, the Netherlands. A sample of Pacific oysters was investigated for the presence of shellfish pathogens as potential causes of the mortality. Yellow-green lesions were observed in several oysters upon clinical inspection. Histopathology showed that 6 out of 36 oysters had a suspected bacterial infection, including 4 Nocardia-like infections. Two bacterial species, Vibrio aestuarianus and Nocardia crassostreae, were isolated from haemolymph samples and identified using PCR and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. This is the first isolation of N. crassostreae from shellfish in European waters. The near full-length 16S rRNA sequence of this Dutch Nocardia sp.... |
